Flashback: Groovy University Years

For some their high school years were the happiest, but not for me. My university years were the most memorable, happiest, and colorful years of my life. The sense of freedom which seems to be inherent with it paved way to all sorts of activities which were not possible in high school.

The coolest one was when my friends and I were asked to form a band for a university event which then led to gigs in pubs and restaurants later on. It was the biggest project we had to take on during our younger years. We were nervous but totally excited.

We were pretty organized. The first thing we did was made sure we had the kind of members we wanted in the band. Musicians who know their instrument and are willing to devote time, effort, and money. Since we were just starting up, funds were scarce. So some instruments were either rented or borrowed. We had to chip in though for the amplifier. It was important for us to have an excellent amp with very good groove tubes inside to make sure the sound of our guitars are enhanced well. Next, we chose the songs we all liked and familiar with. Being familiar with the first set of songs saves time during rehearsals and because you like the songs the probability of a great performance is high, first impression lasts, right? And so, we had a lot of time to prepare for the next set of songs.

Basically, from experience, there are three important things needed to form a band. These are:
> enthusiastic, devoted musicians
> great instruments and equipment
> time, time, time for rehearsals

This is one of the reasons why my university years were the happiest.
What about you?

Musicians, Friends, and Me

Summer on Violin

Looking for a music school for your kids is quite a challenge if you’re an expat in a non-English speaking country.  The biggest hindrance that we often encounter is communication, although I’m sure, the principles, techniques, and other music nitty- gritty are similar. In fact, it took us a while to find the right school with musicians and friends who are not only qualified but are also proficient in English communication. The music school has a great curriculum and is equipped with state of the art facilities and instruments. In addition there are teachers who could explain the lessons well in English. And also, there are staff who we could talk to about our kids’ progress and other school stuff. Having addressed this problem we hope our kids would find learning music enjoyable.

Yamaha Piano Keyboard

Out of the few trusted brands of musical instruments out in the market today, the Yamaha Piano Keyboard is without a doubt one of the best.  It is dependable, durable, and delivers good quality sound.  It is incomparably of highest standards.

Growing children like to explore and want to try anything that catches their attention.  Music touches the souls and excites the hearts of both young and old.  My kids are showing interest in music, whether they will become musicians or not, it is only but right to give them the proper exposure.  Who knows this might just be the thing they’ll need for a great opportunity in the future.

Piano lessons using the Yamaha Piano Keyboard is encouraging and exciting.  The sounds are great and pleasant to listen to.  Music is awesome with it!

Whether one is a professional musician or not having a folding music stand definitely brings great comfort.

My friends and I were once invited to serenade a couple on their 10th year wedding anniversary. During the practices I had my guitar chords book secured on the floor with a paper weight. So you can just imagine I had to stoop down to take a good look at the chords, and stoop even more when I had to flip the pages. What’s worst was when the pages got blown by the wind. Oh my, it was a total mess, uncomfortable, and it wreaked havoc with my concentration. Luckily though, we got hold of a couple of music stands during the performance. And I tell you, it was such a great relief. I had a comfortable sitting position; flipping through the pages was not a problem; and I had my full attention on my music.

12 string guitar

I have always been using a six string guitar since my high school days.  I have seen people bringing their twelve string guitars and I have heard hit songs with twelve string guitars playing on it. But it was not until I played it personally that I truly appreciated the beauty of it.

The twelve string guitar just sounds better, fuller and brighter than a six string guitar. There are dull moments for a six string guitar but the twelve string guitar seems to make it fun, creative, lively even.  The combination of the 2 strings playing the same note with low and high octaves seems to create that brighter sound with the bottom strings creating that chorus effect like sound makes the 12 string guitar a better musical instrument than that of the six string guitar.

What have you got? 6 or 12 string guitar….

Which is your favorite?

I’m not going to deny that I enjoy a good four or five hour karaoke session.  But who doesn’t? – Ken Marino

Karaoke has become an integral part of our stress relief program. Singing songs, though we could hardly sing, makes us feel relaxed. It eases our minds from all the work related stresses we have. Whenever we have the time we always make it a point to go to our favorite Karaoke bar. We never thought to be stuck with just one Karaoke bar since they are all the same right? Wrong! We were dead wrong when we tried out an out of town Karaoke bar in one of our business trips. We sounded just horrible. Not that we sound like pros but there surely was something wrong with it. We tried figuring out what was wrong. Microphones are of good quality, the music machine seems to be working just fine but there surely was something amiss. So we went home with the wanting to know what makes our favorite Karaoke bar tick. Then we went back to our favorite Karaoke bar with the mission of knowing what makes it a lot better than the other Karaoke bars we have tried. Then we found out about the numark kmx02 Having a Karaoke mixer makes singing a better experience since everything is under control. From microphone volume to music volume to music transition everything is under your control. Our favorite Karaoke bar is the best.

Are you a karaoke kind of person?

There are many truths of which the full meaning cannot be realized until personal experience has brought it home. – John Stuart Mill

Experience is the best teacher especially for kinesthetic and musical type of learners.  My daughter, who is a kinesthetic learner, is into music these days.  She is going to play the role of Jack’s mom in “Jack and the Bean Stalk” musical play as part of her school’s annual honors day activity.  She is very excited.  We hear her hum, sing, murmur her lines while playing at home.  This experience has brought a new found interest in playing piano.  No wonder she took out her old, broken kiddie mini piano we bought when she was just a baby.  She has been pretending playing it.  We thought of buying her a new one, but nowadays branded, new musical instruments cost an arm and a leg, and besides we don’t want to live beyond our means. So to bridge the gap, we thought of my musician’s friend used gear. This is the only solution.  Anyway, what matters most is quality and experience.

Thrift shopping and used things, are you into these?
