How Important Is A Child’s Formative Years?

Changes in children during the formative years are remarkably dramatic and fast pace.  The changes which include motor, language, cognitive, social, and emotional developments are unmatched in any other human developmental stages. A child’s behavior during these years, from birth to 8 years old, is an essential bit and parcel to his entire development.  The formative years have the most critical moments which could either make or break a child.  According to UNICEF and other studies, 90 percent of brain development occurs during these years; and that 85 percent of a person’s personality is developed during his formative years. A child’s academic achievement later on in life is gauged by the quality of relationships built through interaction, engagement, and support between the child and parent or caregiver during his early childhood.

Nowadays, since children are starting school at a very early age, school teachers and staff are among the significant people who play an important role in their future’s success. Choosing a school with quality preschool program, like preschool in Katy, TX  is therefore of an utmost importance. Below is a list of pre-requisites parents should consider before choosing a preschool.

  • Teachers and staff  with the right qualifications and training for the job, for example, a degree in Education or Child Psychology.  A teacher with a degree in Engineering, Accountancy, and the likes may be very good for tertiary level, but never for preschool. Preschool teachers must have a strong background about the nature of learning and the learners, and must be trained in how to impart knowledge to young kids.
  • A comprehensive curriculum that gives emphasis to all facets of learning like Cognitive which includes the major subjects like Mathematics, Sciences, Language and Literature, Humanities; Psychomotor like Physical Education, Dance and Music, Design and Technology ; Affective like Life Skills subject, play time, extracurricular and outdoor activities.
  • School facilities – spacious, well-ventilated and learning conducive classrooms, safe, padded indoor playroom, outdoor playground, library, laboratory, computer room, clean kitchen or canteen.
  • An overall child-friendly atmosphere

  1. a very informative article indeed! i myself would like to be around my boy during his formative years, i want to also be able to work hand in hand with teachers in teaching my son so that he would grow up to be a man we can be proud of.

  2. I used to teach kids who are in their formative years. I taught them how to use computer at that early age. I can say that schools must give time and focus for kids at their formative years because this is where most likely skills and attitude are developed

  3. Not a parent, but I do really agree with this. Besides, what we become right now might be the really outcome of how we are raised by our respective parents then.

  4. I’m not a mom but I agree with everything you wrote here, especially that part about the teachers. It’s important that children in their formative years be exposed to competent teachers who can teach them not only the knowledge that they need but also the values that they need to acquire. 🙂

  5. Yes the formative years are the most crucial years for a child that’s why it’s important that we’re very much involved in their lives at this point.

Preschool teachers are usually wonderful, but there seems to be neglect in the quality of teachers in grade-school.

    1. This neglect is a consequence of putting more importance to higher education. Unless private schools and the government realize the importance of formative years and alot time and funds, this “neglect” will remain.

  6. I agree with all of these since it’s important for a child to be learned the right way but it also comes with the learning environment too! The list you’ve made is so familiar since I’m also an Education student too and they’re all correct! 😀

  7. It is with utmost importance that parents should guide their kids to behave properly. What they learned during these formative years will certainly affect who they will be in the future.

  8. As a parent I know how important it is that I am being there as much as I can even if I am working, I tried to balance my work and being a mom during their formative years. When my two older kids were in that stage I enrolled them in a private pre-school which I know could hone their potential better which I could not give when I am at work.

  9. These formative years go so fast. Before you know it, the kids have developed some pretty set behaviors and attitudes about manners and school. Keep an eye and ear on them before it gets too late.

  10. The formative years of a child are of utmost importance. That is why they should get the best schooling and care at that age.

  11. This is one of the dilemmas of working moms. We can not be there for them all the time so we need to be sure we are leaving them to very competent people from the househelp to the teachers.

    Great article. Keep it up.

  12. One essential teacher’s role any kid should have must be fulfilled by the parents. Yes, I firmly believe that parents should spend quality time with the kids and no amount of excuses could replace this element.
