WILL THERE COME A TIME WHEN WE DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT? Where everything is in a stable and healthy condition…..
I’ve read from an article many years back that environment researches are well-funded by rich businessmen who owns big industrial companies. At first I thought, wow, it’s really very noble of these people. But on second thought, it’s quite ironic. And then later, I asked myself, why in the world would they fund a research that could someday recommend for the closure of their not-so-friendly-industry. To my surprise, the reason is not noble at all. These people live by the saying, “…know the law in order to find a way around it. If the research output will not put their businesses in jeopardy, well and good. If it does, then they will know how to twist and bend the information such that it will work for them. After reading that article (maybe in Reader’s Digest, I just could not be certain), I felt desperation creep through me.
Sometimes in my most somber, contemplative mood, I find myself groping for ideas on how to effectively solve environmental problems (superwoman effect). At other times I find myself stuck at the abyss of hopelessness. Deep in my heart I fear for my kids. Will they get to enjoy a fresh morning walk? Will they get the chance to see morning fog (the real one and not industrial smog)? Will they be able to sit on a tree branch singing, playing, or to just simply chill out?
I don’t know if it’s just me or other parents feel the same way as I am about this. Summer is asthmatic. It irritates me so much to see smoke belchers. Whenever we go to the beach, I am dispirited by the sight of rubbish floating in the water. It makes me think how can a highly intellectual homo sapiens be this stupid. Oh well, there is a big difference between intelligence and wisdom after all. Don’t you think so?
What do you think of environmental issues? Do you feel it is too big for you to deal with, and you’d rather leave to the “authorities”?
I practically agree. We should be vigilant enough to do something for our kids. We have to give back and actually take conscious efforts in preserving Mother Earth. Our kids might not live to see how beautiful it is to take a stroll in the woods or even see a live tree. Who knows. Thanks for the great article by the way. 🙂

It is indeed true that there is a bog possibility that kids in the future will not be able to see how magnificent earth is… well maybe they will see it in books. History books 🙁 i hope today’s generation will do something about it… for the next generations sake. Cheers!
I try to be ‘green’ whenever I can. The place where we live in doesn’t recycle, so even if we recycle our garbage, it’ll just be thrown in altogether, and we don’t have actual recycling places we can go to. It’s a good thing we don’t consume canned or bottled drinks so we don’t have much to recycle aside from plastic bags (which we re-use as garbage bags). I really want to be more eco-friendly for the sake of my children’s future.
When I first started writing, the first topic I spent countless hours on was green energy. So, to answer you question, I think environmental issues should be dealt with by everyone. If each of us did our part (e.g. ensuring our vehicles do not smoke belch, segregating trash, using green products–assuming they become more affordable, etc.), then we’d be able to slowly help.
I do not think we should just leave it to the authorities; environmental solutions can be implemented faster if we all work together.
Thank you for the comment Anne. True, it is a concern that should be dealt by EVERYBODY. But government should be more strict in the implementation of whatever environmental policies we have. Or create a law that would protect the environment. For me, government is not concerned enough. Let’s take for example the expensive organic products. If they are environmentally concern, what are they doing about this. It pains me that I would just allow my kids to eat GMOs because they’re affordable than organic. Why are they not supporting organic farming?
you know what i really don’t like? smell of burning leaves! i don’t know why people keep doing it. they complain about pollution and blame the government for not doing anything..but burning leaves in one’s own backyard is the sole doing of an individual and it definitely adds to pollution. people need some discipline on them.
thank you for the comment Cha. You’re right burning definitely adds up to pollution and depletion of the ozone layer. Discipline should start within us, but this needs full and honest support from the government.
This is a very interesting post. There was a point during my college life that I wanted to specialize in Environmental Engineering). But that was like a long time ago.
Regarding giant industries funding a research, I don’t know if it’s true but one example is that of a water engine car. It’s like it’s being controlled by petroleum businesses.
It’s sad right. My father-in-law has experienced to swim and play in Pasig River. Obviously, the next generation cannot do that anymore.
As far as I know, in some highly civilized countries, they preserved 75% of their forests. And these countries get their needs from other countries. That was what I knew when I was in college. I’m not sure of the accuracy though.
It also has something to do with the citizen’s discipline and concern about their own natural resources, take for example Japan and Korea. Sadly here in Philippines, It’s like it’s not on the top priority.

Of course I can not name names here. If progressive countries like Japan has forest, third countries like the Philippines has all the more reasons to preserve their forest. But yeah, your right its never a priority. It’s not even in their list, I think.
