How to Use Essential Oils Safely

If you like to live a healthy and natural life, then you have probably heard a lot about the benefits of essential oils. They are not only a natural product, made from flowers and herbs, they are also thought to be good at restoring peace and health to the body. However, there has been some misinformation regarding essential oils, so it is important that you always use them in the correct way.

Do Your Research

If you are considering using essential oils on yourself or others, then it is important that you first learn about how they work. These are highly potent chemical compounds that can be harmful if not used correctly. For example, if you are looking for essential oils for dark circles, then you need to know which one is best. It is also good to remember that essential oils may have a different effect and use to the ones used from the original plant. That is because the concentrating process can alter the way the oils react to the body. If you are considering entering an essential oil business, be sure to find out if you need any specialized training or licenses before going into practice.

Be Careful on the Skin

Adding essential oils to the skin is one of the best ways to cure ailments, but, it can also be harmful if not applied in the correct way. You shouldn’t apply any essential oil undiluted to the skin, because it is so concentrated, it can cause burns. There is also the risk of overdosing on the oil as it is absorbed through the skin. The oils should always be diluted to the appropriate strength before being used.

Don’t Swallow

While essential oils are good for you on the outside of the body, they can be harmful and even toxic if taken internally. For that reason, you should always keep essential oils out of the reach of children and animals. If you think that a child or an animal has swallowed some oils, then you need to seek professional medical attention immediately. You should also take the bottles with you, so the medical team knows what was ingested.

Test Yourself

Even though essential oils are natural products, there can still be the risk of an allergic reaction. That is why before using the oils, test them on a small patch of your skin. If you start to get an allergic reaction, then you shouldn’t use that oil. You also need to do the same for any other new oil you decide to use as they can have different reactions.

Before using any essential oils on yourself or anyone else, it is vital that you discuss it with your doctor. That is because certain essential oils can cause damage to existing problems such as liver or kidney disease. Essential oils are a great natural way to cure ailments and improve mood. They are also powerful compounds that need to be treated with care.

How to Create a Healthier Diet for You and Your Kids

Our health is the most important asset that we have and having a healthy and nutritious diet is the key to achieving lifelong good health. As parents, an effective diet is also important to give us the energy we need to keep pace with our children, but of course our first priority is always to our kids’ health, so it’s essential that we pay full attention to their diets as well. Cutting down on junk food and adopting healthier options can make a vast difference to how you feel and how your children feel, so let’s look at how easy it is to do.

Increase Your Fruit and Vegetable Intake

Fruit and vegetables are nature’s gift to us all, as they provide us with the essential vitamins and minerals that we need on a daily basis. Expert opinions vary on how much fruit and veg we should consume, but they all agree we should eat between five and ten portions per day. That can sound like a lot but reaching the target can bring huge benefits to your health, fitness and energy levels. If your children are reticent to eating vegetables, or anything healthy, try hiding root vegetables like swede and turnip in among other foodstuffs, or encourage them to find one or two vegetables or fruits that they really like.

Cut Down on Sugar

Many of us have a sweet tooth, and there’s no denying that cakes, chocolate and candy taste great, but they are far from great for our health. Sugar is an addictive substance, and it features heavily in almost all the readymade and processed food stuffs that you can buy. It’s also a leading cause of obesity and linked conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, so it makes sense to reduce your sugar intake as much as possible. One way to do this is to cook your meals yourself using fresh ingredients rather than turning to ready meals or take-aways. This may seem difficult at first, but your body will soon forget its sugar cravings and love its new healthier diet.

Reduce Weight Naturally

Being overweight has an adverse effect upon every aspect of your life, so if you want to lose weight you’ll have to exercise more and eat less. That’s a simplistic equation of course, and some people find that they have to turn to a diet plan to help them say goodbye to their excess pounds; in this case, they should opt for diets based upon purely natural ingredients, such as the HCG diet. You can find more information on this hormone-based diet through expert websites such as Hcgdietreview.Com and this also means that you’ll be able to find the best HCG drops and supplements at the best possible prices.

A healthy diet and lifestyle adopted in childhood is likely to remain in place throughout an adult life, and the best way to encourage your children to eat healthily is to eat healthily yourself. Wave goodbye to processed foods filled with sugar and excess fat and say hello to homemade meals full of natural ingredients such as fresh fruit and vegetables. You’ll be amazed at the transforming effect it can have on you and your family.

Asthma Treatment: Find a Specialist Near You

Here’s a demonstration on how to use a babyhaler by my son, Derick.

The prevalence of Asthma, a modern-day disease nowadays, is a complex issue that has baffled medical practitioners. Commonly known to be caused by allergens like dusts and pollen, as it turned out, there seems to be other causes for asthma. Only half of the population of asthma patients are actually connected to allergies while the other half is still unknown.  Fortunately, for those patients whose asthma is caused by allergens, treatment is available.

For allergen-caused asthma, treatment has become effective and efficient now more than ever. Applied science has definitely done its job.  It should be noted though that early treatment plays a significant role, the earlier the treatment the better.

Naturally just like any other parents of asthmatic children,  we sought professional help.  A Pulmonologist is a doctor specializing in allergies and other diseases affecting the lungs including asthma. A Pulmonologist makes the preliminaries – like tests and a lot of questions about history of family allergies, span of time the child has been having symptoms, medications taken so far, and many others. After the diagnosis,  treatment follows.

These are exactly the procedure we followed with our children. Albeit different medicine type, the treatment procedure was similar.

1. Prescription – Flixotide for my daughter and Seretide for my son. Flixotide (orange) inhaler or puffer contains a medicine called fluticasone propionate. This medicine is frequently called “steroids” but not the “anabolic steroids” abused by athletes. This puffer also contain a medicine called “preventer” which prevents asthma attacks. Fluticasone propionate and “preventer” when taken every day or as prescribed by the doctor lessen the swelling and irritation in the walls of the air ways in the lungs and prevents asthma attacks (medsafe.govt.nz).  Seretide is a 2-in-1 asthma medication. It contains fluticasone propionate from the orange inhaler and salmeterol xinafoate, a Long-Acting Bronchodilator from Serevent inhaler (green) which keeps the air passage open (seretide.co.nz).

2. Dosage.  Two puffs a day,  one in the morning and another in the evening every day, non-stop  for 6 months. If in case you missed a day or two, you would have to re-set the counting, and start anew. If within 6 months there are no asthma attacks, the doctor may lower it to once a day for another three months. In case of asthma episodes within these months, the doctor would tell you to continue with two puffs a day for another two to three months or until there are no more asthma attacks before lowering the number of puffs.

3. BabyHALER is a trademark of the GlaxoSmithKline group of companies.  It is a device that helps babies and toddlers take inhaled medicine in this case the Flixotide and Seretide inhalers. To get acquainted with the parts of a babyhaler please head to parts of a babyhaler.

I hope you find this helpful and please share to those parents with asthmatic children.

Amazing Tips That Will Make You Stop Smoking for Good

Smoking is one of the worst addiction there is.

Not only does it affect you directly but the smoke also has a devastating effect on people around you. It makes matters even worse when you realize that most smokers have a negative view of smoking and would love to quit it for good.

Unfortunately, smoking is similar to coffee: it is something that can easily become a part of your daily routine and it is really hard to quit it when you start. Smokers get used to smoking in certain situations for example, together with coffee and whenever you have coffee the ritual goes in conjunction with cigarettes.

Luckily for you there are numerous ways you can quit this vice. Like most similar things, it is mainly about your mental strength. Nevertheless, there are some tricks that will help you do it more easily. Let’s check them out!

  1. Prepare for a long-term quitting

The biggest issue with cigarettes is that people do not have a long-term plan when it comes to quitting. They have general wish to do it but they usually think short-term. This is not right nor does it give needed results. First, smoker needs to prepare for a lifetime without tobacco and cigarettes. If you simply focus on one day or one week, there is a good chance you will relapse when this week is over. Only by telling yourself that you can live without cigarettes and adhering to this can you truly stop smoking.

  1. Find a substitution

Unfortunately, even though long-term approach is the right way to go most people have difficulty during initial weeks and months. Vice has become a part of your daily routine (as previously mentioned) and it is hard to imagine other rituals without it. This is why it is good to get a substitute. Traditional ones are chewing gums and patches. However, due to development of technology today we have even better solutions. Electronic cigarettes are amazing way to do it. They use e-juice or vape liquid as the main substance. According to health in situations, they are much better than nicotine and do not harm your health.

  1. Remove and reduce things that remind you of cigarettes

These rituals that I’ve mentioned are the main reason for relapsing. Coffee and alcohol are to the main culprits however stress can also be very dangerous. In these situations smokers are used to having a release. Besides the fact that you can find a substitution, you can also try to eliminate things that initially cause you to smoke. If you reduce coffee and start drinking something else, you increase chance of avoiding morning smoke. A lot of people smoke when they go to a cafe or a pub. If you reduce alcohol, you are again able to reduce smoking.

  1. Find a hobby

Although this may seem farfetched, there is a good reason for it. Most people tend to smoke when they don’t know what to do with their hands. They are used to having something in them and this becomes a habit. During your free time, find some hobby that will keep your hands occupied. Even if it’s something seemingly stupid such as mixing playing cards or squeezing rubber ring grip, it can be a great help in getting rid of this nasty habit.

  1. Do physical activity

Smokes and training do not go well together. If you are doing some aerobic training, you will constantly require more air and bigger lung capacity. This will prevent you from doing anything that goes against your biological organism. Even if you smoke at first, there is a good chance you will quit it after some time due to sheer inability to keep you physically fit. Just make sure to be persistent with training and you can slowly reduce your need for nicotine.

Conclusion

Anti-smoking tips are in fact small tricks that should dissuade you from continuing to smoke. They are simple things you can use to reduce your addiction and lose will to smoke. If you make them a part of your routine, you will be on a good path to a healthier life.

Life Starts At 40

There’s some truth in “Life starts at 40”.

A relatively healthy person frequents clinics or hospitals during his 30’s.  Pains and sickness seem to appear out of nowhere during this time. If these symptoms are left unattended could complicate into something serious, as often told by doctors to patients.  Our body is like a car.  After the warranted years, bolts loosen up and parts wore off.  As we near our 40’s, people start thinking of lifestyle change such as quit smoking, limit alcohol in-take, engaging oneself in a regular exercise, and eating healthy.  Reasons vary.

For us, we want to live long enough to see our kids grow and attain stability in life, and if our bodies permit maybe meet our grandchildren.

Among the lifestyle changes mentioned above, the latter two are the most challenging for us.  But since we need to start afresh on our 40’s we have to take on the needed changes.

  • Exercise your way to a healthy you.  We are home buddies and a bit of couch potatoes, sadly.  Up until this time we haven’t settle on a regular exercise routine.  Aside from this, we also found our super structured schedule 24/7 a great hindrance. We hope to get our acts together on this ASAP.
  • You are what you eat, so eat healthy.  We LOVE to eat. The health issues we are facing at the moment is food related. So this is definitely the first thing in the MUST Change List.

Be Guided Know What’s On Your Grocery Labels

There are lots of labels on every product in a grocery store—fat, sugar, calories, low-sugar, low-carb, glycemic index. How do you decipher some of them in order to know what you’re getting?

Every label tells you something about how animals were raised or how crops were grown. It can also tell you a little bit about the regulation related to that label—whether it’s government or self-regulation, for example. There are also processes that the label can key you in on—for example, if antibiotics or growth hormones were used. Other labels may also tell you about the human element involved in your food—whether workers and farmers receive fair wages or fair prices.

For example, grain fed on a label only suggests that animals are fed a diet of grain—but it isn’t a guarantee. Grass fed, on the other hand, indicates that animals have natural grass or forage—but they may not be raised in pastures.

This graphic breaks down all of those labels for you, proving a helpful guide as you do shopping for your family, your health, and the earth.

BEST TIPS TO CONTROL DUST MITES

Dust mites love to breed in moist areas like your bed. You could be sleeping in with possibly thousands or even millions of dust mites lurking in your bed. Experts say that there are approximately up to 2,000 microscopic cousins to spider in just an ounce of mattress dust.

Crazy!

And that could lead to a lot of health problems such as skin allergy and asthma. Dust mites can be pretty hard to eliminate, but if you take small effective steps constantly, this can help reduce their numbers in time.

Here are some easy tips to help you.

1) Deprive Mites of Moisture

Dust mites die when there is insufficient moisture in the air. So always keep humidity levels low. You can use a dehumidifier to maintain your room’s humidity level to something in between 30 to 50 percent. Another great way is to use waterproof mattress pad to cover vinyl mattress, and a vinyl covered pillow with zipper to seal and protect your pillows.

2) Keep your room cool

Dust mites do not just live with moisture but also thrive in warm weather. To fight back and reduce dust mites, one way is to keep your room temperature low. Open your windows to get some fresh air and cool down your room.

3) Wash bedding weekly, in hot water

Wash your mattress pads, blanket and duvets for at least once a month, pillow cases and sheets at least weekly in hot water above 130 degrees. A temperature of 130 degrees and F are what kills dust mites.

 4) Flip and Vacuum regularly

Your mattress should also be flipped regularly, recommended every time your season changes. You also have to clean your mattress regularly by vacuuming. Regular vacuuming will keep your mattress clean and sanitized. Remove all the bedding and sprinkle a mixture of baking soda and essential oil. This removes odor, dust and bacteria on your mattress. Vacuum your mattresses every time you flip them. If you have some extra budget, invest in a vacuum with HEPA (high efficiency particular air) filter which is designed specifically to suck up allergens.

5) Buy washable toys

Even if how cute they are, stuffed toys can accumulate dust quickly and is not recommended to sit on your bed. But if you insist, opt for toys made of plastic or those washable toys that you can wash regularly together with your beddings.

6) Use allergen blocking covers

Protect yourself from allergens by encasing your mattress and pillows with allergen blocking covers.  These covers prevent dust mites from making your bed their real estate.

7) Use Protection

Stains can be pretty hard to remove so definitely, avoid messy mishaps to your mattress. But it is quite inevitable to not mess your mattress no matter how keen you are to avoid staining it. So a great way to protect your mattress is by using mattress pads. Mattress pads shield your mattress from food spill over, blood, urine, sweat and other possible stains.

8) Clean stains

In the event that you forgot to put on a mattress pad and you spill over some coffee, make sure to clean them right away. You can use an upholstery shampoo or dry suds to remove them. Dry suds are an alternative way of cleaning stains. This is made by mixing a quarter of detergent liquid and a few teaspoons of water.

Bed bugs and dust mites are some of the leading causes of asthma and other allergies. And these allergens are mostly found in our beds. It’s the time to fight back. Use these great tips to reduce stubborn allergy causing substances in your bed. And you should be able to relax and sleep at ease knowing that you have a clean and healthy bed to sleep with!

Veggy Nuggets

Eating vegetable is definitely the healthiest way to live.  Vegetables are natural, but has to be organic not genetically altered.  They contain less fat and calories, and are full of vitamins and minerals for the proper functioning of the body.

Yet these facts mean little to little children.  It is up to adults to find ways and means to let these little ones ingest these without them knowing it.

My kids, especially my very picky son, are totally into this.

Here’s my version

VEGGIES NUGGETS

1 1/2 to 2 cups minced mixed vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, carrots, sweet corn, etc)

1 cup all purpose flour

2 medium bulb minced onions

2 large cloves minced garlic

1 tsp. salt

1 tbsp. fish sauce

1 tbsp. oyster sauce

2 large eggs

left-over fried chicken or fish (optional)

Here’s how

In a bowl mix all ingredients well.  Deep fried in vegetable oil.

You may notice that my nuggets are not shaped well.  I’m a busy mom and got no time rolling them into balls.  So I just scoop a spoonful of the nugget mix and drop it into the hot oil.

How did it go?

Did your family like it?
