Bond In The Beach

There is nothing like family time on the beach.

The beach is one of the all-time favorites for family bonding.  It is a place where kids can be free. They can build their sand castles, run, scream their lungs out without the fear of disturbing others.  It is a place where Moms and Dads unwind and momentarily forget all about work-related stress. It is an inexpensive, heaven-sent place for the family.

But whatever beach activities the family has delineated, there are important essentials that should not be forgotten. First is wearing comfortable beach attire, swimming trunks and bathing suits, or plus size bathing suits for big mommas. Second is protection from the harmful effects of the sun, bring sunglasses and sunblock lotion. Finally, beach shovels and toys for the kids. Protection and comfort are just as important as having fun during family time.

Our Family’s Precious Weekend

Fruitshakes for a Healthy You

Sugar is a general term used to describe substances that are composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen at varying amount.  Thus there are different types of sugar – monosaccharides, dissacharides, and oligosaccharides.  These are present in many different food including fruits and vegetables.  Naturally contained sugar are balanced by fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other components found in fruits and vegetables.

Reality bites, unnatural sugar is readily available.  Examples of unnatural sugar are found in processed food such as cola drinks, powdered juices, powdered teas, energy bars, chocolate and sugar-coated crisps and chips. The thing is, these are even cheaper than the ones found in natural products.  This widespread availability, may be economically good but health-wise damaging especially for kids who are still developing their nutritional foundation, metabolism, and hormones.  Sugar could also create havoc to adults who have health issues like diabetes, high-blood pressure, heart diseases, insulin problems, and weight problems.

But it seems like it is way too impossible to do away with sugar nowadays.  Maybe what we can do is minimize our sugar consumption by eating more of the natural food like fruits and vegetables.

So lately, we have been cutting on our cola, powdered juices and tea consumption.  Instead, we blend our own fruit shake.  My family loves watermelon and cantaloupe milkshake.  These two are naturally sweet.  So they need lesser amount of sweetener.

3 tbsp. of condensed milk or raw honey, 2-3 cups of sliced watermelon/cantaloupe, 1 cup water, and a bit of ice are just the right combination for us.  You can modify this depending on your preference. But I suggest using fruits which are in season, they are usually cheaper.  So you are not only eating healthy, but you are also spending wisely.

Loom Band Craze

Lately, loom band making has been keeping me busy among other things.  The set was bought for my daughter. It was not long, though, before she got bored with it.  The steps are too intricate for a 5 year old. So I took over, and found it interesting and addicting.  Here are my loom bands..tada!

As I was doing the different designs, Summer, got interested and eventually managed to make a fishtail loom band.

What loom band design do you like best?

How to Throw a Kawaii / Lolita Themed Slumber Party

Kawaii might just be the best-known trend you’ve never heard of. Kawaii is, literally, being cute, loveable and adorable – from the Japanese “ka” meaning acceptable and “ai” meaning love. The trend is in essence the movement from young Japanese women from the qualities of refined and beautiful to cute and neat. As a cultural phenomenon, Kawaii is not isolated to Japanese society, and is spreading the globe through pop music and culture icons like Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne. If your daughter, friend, or you yourself are interested in throwing your very own Kawaii/Lolita themed slumber party, look no further:

Pajamas

As fashion is the key element of both the Kawaii/Lolita movement, and the pajamas sleepover party movement itself – express your inner Kawaii through your totally adorable anime style pajamas. Think pink, cute, cuddly: and bonus points for onesies! Spencer’s have a great selection of girls pajamas & sleepwear, perfect for a Kawaii slumber party. In keeping with the Kawaii/Lolita style, the perfect anime style pajamas will have elements of ribbons, ruffles, bows and lace. Animals like pandas, cats and mice are also very popular. The Lolita style is about being cute, innocent and beautiful – therefore the perfect excuse to pull out your pinkest and frilliest pj’s for this slumber party!

Snacks

Your typical run-of-the-mill popcorn and candy might work fine at a slumber party, but for a truly authentic Kawaii party you can’t go past a tea party. Imagine a high tea: the pastries, sweets, savouries and teas, and couple that with the Kawaii aesthetic of over-the-top cuteness and you have your very own Lolita tea party. Your local supermarket will have a great range of sweet and herbal teas, and finger sandwiches and cakes are even the healthier option at slumber parties, especially over candy!

Check out some of these adorable Kawaii party food recipes on Pinterest, and get some inspiration from this cute http://blog.hwtm.com/2012/11/cute-kawaii-love-birthday-party/http://blog.hwtm.com/2012/11/cute-kawaii-love-birthday-party/.

Activities

In keeping with the originating Japanese culture of the Kawaii movement, set up a dinner station with the girls at your slumber party to make sushi. For those who don’t like the idea of seaweed just yet, lettuce works as an alternative option. The ingredients for sushi are nothing out of the ordinary from your weekly grocery shop, with the exception of sushi mats, available from your local homeware store.

After everyone has eaten, how about trying to learn your name in Japanese kanji? For those with spare time in the preparation stage, writing a cute little note for each girl with their name in Japanese is a great Kawaii memento, and a fun activity for later in the night.

Other activities could include watching anime DVDs, doing makeovers and using Japanese nail art on your nails, and flicking through Japanese fashion magazines. If your girls have lots of Lolita fashion, they could come in their favourite outfits or pajamas sleepwear and have a photoshoot in the garden!

With the increasingly popularity of anime style, don’t be surprised if your daughter asks you for a Kawaii pajamas sleepwear sleepover sometime in the near future. For when she does, keep this bookmarked. Tanoshimu! (Enjoy!)

Kids Academy Reading App Review

reading

The skills that are emphasized and being developed in this app are the very foundations needed for kids to do reading operations.  Kids using this app are assumed to have prior knowledge on letter recognition and sound.  It starts with rhyming words and beginning letter sounds exercises which develop their listening skills and complicated sound recognition.  It will then move on to short vowels sounds, long vowel sounds, and finally being able to write words.  The voice over is clear.  The words are well pronounced and enunciated making it easy for kids to follow and understand.  The letters are large and colorful which can draw the kid’s attention to it rather than the other graphics on the screen.  In this app music and sound are enhanced, and the graphics are very responsive.  Plus, it can be personalized by creating your kid’s own profile.

Derick’s First On-Stage Experience

Derick’s First On-Stage Experience

Derick (in bright yellow “football” shirt), who’s now 2 and 8 months old danced to “You are my sunshine and Twist” together with the rest of S.I.S.S reception students.

Seeing little ones perform in front of a crowd with confidence and enjoying every bit of it makes parents really proud. Synchronization is no longer important, the mere fact that they were able to go up the stage, perform the entire presentation without throwing tantrums is definitely a major FEAT.

We hope that this confidence is maintained and put to good use in the future.

To Derick, may you grow up full of charm, confidence, and humility.  May you always find yourself in auspicious situations, surrounded by happy, helpful, and kind-hearted individuals.

We love you.
