Life Starts At 40

There’s some truth in “Life starts at 40”.

A relatively healthy person frequents clinics or hospitals during his 30’s.  Pains and sickness seem to appear out of nowhere during this time. If these symptoms are left unattended could complicate into something serious, as often told by doctors to patients.  Our body is like a car.  After the warranted years, bolts loosen up and parts wore off.  As we near our 40’s, people start thinking of lifestyle change such as quit smoking, limit alcohol in-take, engaging oneself in a regular exercise, and eating healthy.  Reasons vary.

For us, we want to live long enough to see our kids grow and attain stability in life, and if our bodies permit maybe meet our grandchildren.

Among the lifestyle changes mentioned above, the latter two are the most challenging for us.  But since we need to start afresh on our 40’s we have to take on the needed changes.

  • Exercise your way to a healthy you.  We are home buddies and a bit of couch potatoes, sadly.  Up until this time we haven’t settle on a regular exercise routine.  Aside from this, we also found our super structured schedule 24/7 a great hindrance. We hope to get our acts together on this ASAP.
  • You are what you eat, so eat healthy.  We LOVE to eat. The health issues we are facing at the moment is food related. So this is definitely the first thing in the MUST Change List.

Is exercising at home really as good as going to the gym?

Absolutely.

The place of exercise, may contribute to the success of attaining ones goal of getting and staying fit, but the greatest chunk depends entirely on ones consistency. It is the most important key.  Exercise physiologists say, sure, exercise at home have their own disadvantages and distractions but consistent exercise at home or the absence of it is the same story as going to the gym.

Home exercise equipment has come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years, which is a good thing.  Global economic and societal changes have greatly affected how families manage and set priorities.  There have been huge, steady, upward trend in stay-at-home-moms (SAHM), working-at-home-moms (WAHM), even working-at-home-dads (WAHD), and individuals holding 2 to 3 jobs to make ends meet.  Whichever the case maybe, these are individuals who do not either have the luxury of time or money to hit the gym or join a health club.  Exercising at home is the most ideal way of getting and staying fit for it is as integral to ones life as eating and sleeping.  As mentioned earlier, exercising at home has its own disadvantages and distractions, but there are ways around it and even make it fun and worth looking forward to.

Convert a room, a corner of the house, a patio, or even a veranda into a mini gym.  It does not take much effort and money to do this.  Inexpensive exercise equipment such as fit balls, push-up bars, dumbbells, and exercise bands are accessible in stores.  Even prices of treadmills are at a discount at both physical and online stores.

Schedule your exercise at your most convenient time.  Following a rigid exercise timetable is not the be-all and end-all.  It is not something to fret and discouraged about.  If something comes up, re-schedule it at an immediate time. Remember the key is consistency.  For moms, having to exercise at a scheduled time every single day is a luxury.  What can be done is to grab every opportunity one has in a day to do some exercise.

Be encouraged and be pushed to exercise and to exercise some more by listening to upbeat music.  Most often than not, upbeat music starts me up and keeps me going.  Some upbeat music that you could include in your playlist – Move like Jagger (Maroon 5), Single ladies and Girls Run the World (Beyonce), Super Bass (Nicki Minaj), Uptown Funk (Mark Ronson), and Shake It Off (Taylor Swift).

Last but definitely not the least, having the right attitude is essential.  Even though buying ourselves new exercise wardrobe or a new pair of running shoes somehow encourages us to exercise, these after all are extrinsic motivations. What’s needed to keep the fire burning is intrinsic motivation that pushes one to go on and on until a goal is achieved, and to continue to go on to keep that goal. Changing ones mindset is a good start. Write down your goal, make a diagram of your progress, or if you aim for a fit and shapely body, post a photo of it on your gym wall.  Keep thinking of this goal just like how much time you spend thinking of what to prepare for every family meal.

Remember, the key is consistency. Happy exercising at home.

Outdoor Sports Shelter

jewel-sports-shelter_main

Outdoor sports are great family activities.  It is fun, and brings family members closer to each other.  It should be encouraged and promoted in the community.  But since it is outdoor, there are few environmental factors to be considered.

1.  Heat.  Not many people realized the harmful effects of heat.  The effects are not abrupt, but cumulative. This is what makes it dangerous. The effects are slow, so people think it’s harmless and take it for granted. Then, one day you will be surprised to be struck with one or two of the following heat related illness such as  sunburn and wrinkles, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and skin cancer. Sports shelter, shelters outdoor sports onlookers from the harmful effects of heat.  Making every family’s outdoor sports experience comfortable and sheltered. This will help reduce the heat related deaths of an average of 350 people each year according to the Center for Disease and Control (CDC).

2.  Rain is another environmental factor to be considered.  It may seem harmless. Some people think that plunging into the rain is good as it has a cooling effect.  True, if your body temperature prior to soaking in the rain is normal. Otherwise, the body undergoes stress as it is forced to suddenly balance the body temperature brought about by the sudden change in temperature in the environment.  For example, chanting and cheering for your favorite sports team on a sunny, very hot day, then suddenly get soaked wet by rain.  This stress has detrimental effects on the body. This can cause dryness in the skin and mucus membrane of the eyes.  It can also bring about eye infections, respiratory infections, and muscular spasms.  Sports shelter provides the warmth needed by the body to slowly adjust to sudden temperature outdoor.

While making sure that outdoor sports and activities are fun, shelter and protect your family and friends as well from the harmful effects of environmental elements.

Cha-Manaw: Lemon Iced Tea

lemon iced tea

My ultimate favorite Thai drink is the Cha-Manaw or the lemon Iced Tea, which comes in variants of hot (Cha-Manaw-Ron) and cold Cha-Manaw (Cha-Manaw-Yen). It’s main ingredients are tea juice, extracted from dried tea plant, and Manaw or lemon.

For the cold lemon iced tea, this is how they do it –  mix the extracted tea juice and sugar together in a small cup.  Pour this solution in a bigger container or cup full of ice.  Then squeeze a quarter of lemon into it.  You may increase the amount of lemon according to your own preference.  I personal like it with a lot of lemon juice.

For the hot lemon tea, just follow the instruction above except the ice part.

It is served by peddlers on the street and even in the most posh restaurant in Thailand.  Thai people from all walks of life, from kids to oldies drink Cha-Manaw.

So it’s no surprise if Thailand like India, China, and Japan has low incidence of gout, a form of arthritis. Lemon (Manaw) is an integral part of their diet.  Lemon juice is extremely beneficial in combating joint pains and gout.  It helps expel uric acid in urine. Uric acid is a by-product of the breakdown of purine-rich food like legumes, nuts, anchovies, organ meat, meat extracts, spinach, mushrooms, and alcohol and other beverages.  Excessive level of uric acid results to its crystallization and deposition in joints, ligaments, and tendons.  Consequently causing joint pains.

Below are food that help lower uric acid;

Oranges,  Papayas,  Kiwifruit, Strawberries, Bell pepper, Broccoli, Bananas, Celery, Tomatoes, Cabbage, Parsley, Pineapple, Cocoa, Vegetable oils, and Water
