5 fantasy heroes your kids could dress as for Halloween

halloween

Kids love superheroes – from the sweeping cape of Superman to the attitude of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, there’s something about having superpower that really appeals to kids.

Perhaps because, as a kid, you’re often powerless and have to take orders from adults, so pretending to have ultimate super powers is really appealing.

So it’s no surprise that superheroes are some of the most common kid halloween costumes. And the great thing is that these costumes can be worn again and again, for birthday parties, school events or even just in everyday games. Here are five of my favourite superhero costume ideas for kids:

Superman
The quintessential, classic fantasy hero – able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and faster than a speeding locomotive. Superman is THE superhero, and makes for an ideal kids halloween costume.

His distinctive and iconic costuming means nobody will miss you who your child is dressed as this Halloween. If my kid wanted to be superman, I’d go for the officially licensed DC Comics deluxe Man of Steel costume – it’s got everything you need, including Superman’s red, blue and yellow jumpsuit with built-in muscle chest and signature “S” on his chest.

With great power comes great responsibility!

Captain America
If you were frozen solid in an ice-cube for seventy years you’d want to kick some ass this Halloween too! Captain America has been one of the big fantasy hero names since the 1940s, and was hugely popular during the war-time. With the recent revival of the Avengers Initiative, he has come full-circle and is a great option for your kids halloween costume this year!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle
They might not be your traditional superheroes, but the TMNT crew are heroes all the same. Saving the world from evil overloads and alien invaders, all while rocking some really cool renaissance names, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be the ideal kids halloween costume to take down some candy thieves.

Batgirl
If your daughter is sick of dressing as a princess or a fairy, rock her world this Halloween with a kickass female fantasy hero costume – like Batgirl! The female counterpart to Batman, Batgirl has been significant to the comic industry in debating the place of women in fantasy and is considered a feminist character. Your girl will be in good company in this costume!

Wonderwoman
Its not a fantasy heroes list without her. Wonder Woman is the warrior princess of the Amazons, and has superhuman skills and strengths, any girl would be proud to dress as someone as cool as Wonder Woman this Halloween.

You can buy all these costumes, and more, from the kids section on SpiritHalloween.com. And if you want an outfit to match, check out these amazing superhero bodysuits from Australian clothing label Black Milk Clothing.

From classic comic book superheros to newly imagined warriors of justice, there are so many choices for superhero kid halloween costumes. Which superhero do your kids want to be this halloween?

Day Camp @Samila Sheep Farm

In the morning I just mentioned “Sheep Farm Day!”, Summer and Derick woke up without any fuss at all, none whatsoever.  They were very excited.  This is their first camping together with their friends.  What made this even more exciting for them is that they had to wear rubber boots because it is rainy season, and the soil is wet.  Just like Peppa Pig and George, they wanted to jump in muddy puddles. They had been asking me to bring them outside to do that. They both had a blast.

The teachers painted their faces.  They participated in some team building activities in the morning. Summer was re-united with her old friend, Lookaew. They were inseparable the whole day.  Lunch was served by the farm, they all ate and shared halal food.

In the afternoon, they headed for a nature walk around the area which are full of pine trees.  It is a pretty vast area for tiny legs to hike, but my little ones did not complain. After which, they went to the sheep farm.  Summer fed the animals, but Derick just sat on the damp soil tired from the walk.  They, then, had a short tour of the place on a tram. They went home that day tired, but very happy.

How Important Is A Child’s Formative Years?

preschool 2

Changes in children during the formative years are remarkably dramatic and fast pace.  The changes which include motor, language, cognitive, social, and emotional developments are unmatched in any other human developmental stages. A child’s behavior during these years, from birth to 8 years old, is an essential bit and parcel to his entire development.  The formative years have the most critical moments which could either make or break a child.  According to UNICEF and other studies, 90 percent of brain development occurs during these years; and that 85 percent of a person’s personality is developed during his formative years. A child’s academic achievement later on in life is gauged by the quality of relationships built through interaction, engagement, and support between the child and parent or caregiver during his early childhood.

Nowadays, since children are starting school at a very early age, school teachers and staff are among the significant people who play an important role in their future’s success. Choosing a school with quality preschool program, like preschool in Katy, TX  is therefore of an utmost importance. Below is a list of pre-requisites parents should consider before choosing a preschool.

  • Teachers and staff  with the right qualifications and training for the job, for example, a degree in Education or Child Psychology.  A teacher with a degree in Engineering, Accountancy, and the likes may be very good for tertiary level, but never for preschool. Preschool teachers must have a strong background about the nature of learning and the learners, and must be trained in how to impart knowledge to young kids.
  • A comprehensive curriculum that gives emphasis to all facets of learning like Cognitive which includes the major subjects like Mathematics, Sciences, Language and Literature, Humanities; Psychomotor like Physical Education, Dance and Music, Design and Technology ; Affective like Life Skills subject, play time, extracurricular and outdoor activities.
  • School facilities – spacious, well-ventilated and learning conducive classrooms, safe, padded indoor playroom, outdoor playground, library, laboratory, computer room, clean kitchen or canteen.
  • An overall child-friendly atmosphere

Money-Saving Tips for New Parents

new parent

Under the best of circumstances, being a new parent can be as challenging and stressful as it is rewarding, and if you’re struggling financially it can be especially stressful. Even if you’re not quite at the point where you’re borrowing money from your own parents or taking out payday loans to help cover emergencies, you may still be worried about how you’re going to provide a good life for your child. But don’t fret; there are many ways new parents can save money.

  1. Get your financial ducks in a row. This is surely one of the most important things you can do, and of course it’s really best to do it as far in advance of your baby’s birth (or even its conception) as possible. Put aside all of the money that you’re able to spare and make sure that you have adequate insurance. Also be sure to take advantage of all applicable tax credits and other benefits such as maternity or paternity leave, credits for working mums and dads or child tax credits. Do not hesitate to consult a tax adviser and/or check direct.gov.uk to find out about benefits for which you and your family may be eligible.
  2. If you live in England or Wales, register your baby’s birth within 42 days of the child’s arrival. This can save you a couple of hundred pounds right off the bat. Registration, which takes only about half an hour, is free, but failure to register with 42 days could result in a fine of up to £200. You can generally register your baby’s birth at the hospital where the birth took place or you can do it at your local register office (see Gov.uk for the location of your nearest office). For a few pounds you can also purchase a birth certificate that displays the details in the register. Scotland and Northern Ireland have slightly different rules for registering births; check the General Register Office for Scotland, or NI Direct.
  3. Get over thinking that you have to buy the most expensive clothes and accessories. Seriously. Just get over it. Every parent wants the best for their child, of course – and mums and dads are particularly conscientious with the first child, it seems – but very often, generic or secondhand and hand-me-down items are perfectly okay. Remember that your baby won’t know the difference. And if you have friends who are so shallow that they snub you for failing to splurge on the most expensive designer accouterments, are they really your friends? When shopping for a baby, safety and durability are the most important factors whether you’re shopping for a crib, high chair or toys. (And here’s a tip for frugal parents who plan to have more children: Buy durable, gender-neutral outfits and accessories as much as possible.)
  4. Consider reusable nappies. Although environmentalists have rightly criticised the widespread use of disposable nappies and wipes, these products have been a huge help for overworked parents over the past few decades. However, even if you use generic and store brands, using disposables can add up to a lot of money over time. On the other hand reusable nappies can save you £600 or more on just one child. If you’re hesitant and have visions of those old-school nappies, realise that modern reusable nappies are much less cumbersome: they are lighter weight and wash and dry easily. Admittedly they aren’t for everyone and may not be for you, especially in the first few weeks when you’re just getting adjusted to being “on call” around the clock, but perhaps when your baby is a little older you might consider using them. Consider using flushable liners in the reusables, which will still help keep your costs under control and will help the environment as well.
  5. Never stop looking for sales. If you keep your eyes open for sales and specials you will never need to pay “full price” for anything. Don’t hesitate to avail yourself of some of your favourite stores’ “Baby Clubs” for free merchandise, vouchers and coupons.

Perhaps the best bit of advice for new parents is to remember that you are not alone. There are plenty of options for stressed-out new parents, whether you need advice, financial help or just moral support. Help is always available – not just on the Internet but in your own community as well. Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Two Absolutely Important Reasons Why Parent Should Engage Kids In Outdoor Activities

Learning is achieved when one is able to apply the concepts and theories learnt in the classroom in real life scenario. Major chunk of classroom learning is concentrated on acquiring of knowledge from teacher lecture and class discussions.  Although these are undoubtedly and inevitably important teaching methodologies, these alone could not achieve the kind of learning we aimed for in our kids.  Otherwise, learning will remain in the cognitive level which is bound to be forgotten sooner or later. This is where hands-on and outdoor activities come in, which complete the whole parcel.  While in the classroom minds are filled with concepts and theories, the meaningful experiences gained through hands-on and outdoor activities build connections between the two.

Here are two absolutely important reasons why we should engage our kids in outdoor activities.

  • It REINFORCES, STRENGTHENS, and, SOLIDIFIES learning.  A child learning about animals may only see some animals from the teacher’s prepared visuals.  Backing up these vivid pictures with real animals reinforces learning; which is further strengthened by their experience of actually hearing, smelling, and touching the animals. A child will appreciate and remembers the three secondary colors if he actually mixes colors and witnesses with his own eyes as the color changes. This meaningful experience enables a child to build connections between concepts and theories learnt in the classroom and the real world solidifying learning for life.

  • It gives opportunities for kids to become CONSCIENTIOUS SOCIAL BEING. Outdoor activities present situations wherein the affective domain is exercised. Children interact with both their fellow and the physical environment around them which includes plants, animals, and other inanimate objects.  The experiences gained from these interactions could lead to feelings and reflections in a whole different way about themselves, towards others and the environment. These affective experiences are foundation to a principled individual who has great sense of what is right and what is wrong. Individuals governed by conscience and love not only for himself but for others and the environment.

They tried mixing the paints to create another color. Summer helped Derick with his painting who kept insisting on doing things on his own. After the painting session, they joined other kids playing in the nearby playground.

Parenting Challenges: Favoritism

Favoritism is everywhere, in the work place, among colleagues and friends.

It is a reality.

Favoritism exists even in our family. When asked parents would automatically say that they treat their kids with fairness, which is ideal. But being ideal does not necessarily mean it is being followed by everyone. Whether parents are in denial or are totally oblivious, it is a family issue that may seem insignificant but in actuality has great emotional impact on the child.

It is something worth discussing about and worth sharing our insights and experiences with. The discussions might just be a heaven sent answer for inexperienced parents, and consequently saving a child from emotional turmoil.

What will I do when ……

…… I feel annoyance to one of my kids (for whatever reason) and a favorable inclination towards the other?

Feel free to share your thoughts on this.

Reading Corner: Splash and Squelch

Splash and Squelch is another Oxford Reading Tree book.
This is more than just a reading video. Summer could not keep herself from sharing her thoughts about what she’s reading. I just let her be, she seemed to enjoy it anyway.

Do you have any thoughts about the video?
